Bags of spring vintage accessories

March 5, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

Today we will start to add our new spring range of vintage accessories to our ASOS boutique. We have lots of handbags in best selling styles: the boho saddle bag and the ladylike kelly in particular.

The saddle bag comes in leather and suede, in browns and even some brights. These are perfect bags for all the festivals coming up.

The ladylike kelly is a vintage classic and looks great with the 50s/60s vibe. With the return of Mad Men and the success of Pan Am these are a must have item.

We have some classic country chic scarves in vibrant colours, a perfect contrast to spring pastels.

We are also introducing some waist cinching belts for that 50s look.

And a few pairs of soft leather driving gloves.

Finally, we have some accessories that are just lovely….how about this 1930s Czech beaded bag?

Or this 1940s chocolate suede handheld number?

Or this classic Shilton weekend bag from the 1980s?

Now all we need is some more sunshine!

Check out our boutique here.

Is there a doctor in the house?

March 1, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

Well there are loads of doctors here…by doctors I, of course, mean Dr Martens. They are totally on trend this year and we can’t get our greedy little mits on them fast enough. I first noticed everyone wearing them at the Clothes Show Live last year…and now they are positively everywhere!

We have green ones, red, ones, flowery ones, high top ones, smart brogue ones….the list continues!

But who exactly is this doctor?

The company was set up by Benjamin Griggs and Septimus Jones, in the early 1900s, making boots for workmen and the army. In 1945 Klaus Maertins, a German army doctor hurt his foot on a skiing accident. Finding that his army boots hurt his injured foot, he set about to invent the famous air cushioned soles that DMs have. He used discarded rubber from the airfields.

It wasnt until 1960s that Bill Griggs who owned the company bought the licence for the sole. He then went on to design the new boot with the classic yellow stitching and the loop at the back of the boot. It is apparently his handwriting on it.

The cast of This Is England do the skinhead look

Up until the skin heads took it as their own, they were mainly sold as work boots. Pete Townsend of The Who famously wore them on stage in ’66 and the boot never looked back.

Air Guitar

The punks in the late 70s wore them too with pride alongside the goths….the DM boot became iconic.

Sid Vicious in a Saatchi and Saatchi ad

This continued into the 90s with Grunge.

More practical than stacked platforms huh Naomi?

I bought some second-hand ones from a workwear store in Bedford in ’88…and teamed them up with vintage hot pants and mini dresses! (I’m looking for a picture as we speak!). I only had one pair in black, then upgraded to a pair of German Army Boots. Fancied myself as Bedford’s version of Tank Girl. (yes I wore cut offs and shaved my hair before you ask!)

So as the 90s is back in fashion again… everyone is now wearing them. Even Hannah Montana and Lourdes are getting into the trend.

Who looks best in their footwear?

She’s so cuuute!

For now though I say…do it, enjoy it, customise it….and most importantly…wear VINTAGE!

Our Hermes Find

February 29, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

We have a beautiful rare item for sale this week. We bought this Hermes silk scarf last week and it arrived on the website last Monday.

It is silk and has hand rolled edges. The design is a classic equestrian image with a stirrup and chains.

It is called Belle de Cour and was designed in 1969 by Francoise de la Perriere.

They are becoming so collectable, that I keep wondering whether I should put it away in my wardrobe!!

It was designed in a few different colourways but personally I love this olive and navy blue colour…very classic and will look great all year round. It’s already had two offers in less than 24 hours…I don’t think it will be around for long!

It is available to buy here

A true beauty

February 24, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

Now, I realise that vintage fur is a heavily debated subject.  My view is I don’t agree with the killing of animals for their fur. However, when this was done over 60 years ago…I feel it would be better to love and cherish the item than to let it rot in the loft or send it to landfill.

So, please dont tell me off, but I want to share with you this true stunner. I bought it yesterday and cannot quite believe I am parting with it. It is a true beauty.

It’s a blonde mink with a gorgeous style. Cream leather strips criss crossing with silver beads form the buttons on the double breasted front.

A back belt with another button sitting centrally ensure it’s stunning from the back.

Side splits on the sleeves give detail to the sides.

Fully lined, soft, mint condition….why am I selling it exactly?

One thing’s for sure….no coat, real or faux is made this beautifully nowadays.

Fashion Friday!

February 10, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

Over the last 2 years there has been a lot of debate as to whether the 1980s is vintage. Last year, vintage fans recoiled in horror at the thought that the early 90s is beginning to be also classed as vintage also. Some call it retro.

For me, whether it’s vintage, retro or merely second-hand I can’t quite believe the trends from this decade are now in fashion and being worn by many a young thing. I’m starting to sound old but as I was at uni during the early 90s I can clearly say I was there and wore the T shirt…literally.

Well, here at Your Vintage Life, we embrace the look, It’s fashion after all, and if Topshop is doing it then so can we (at a much more affordable price I hasten to add).

Late last year we wrote a blog discussing the key trends and who influenced them which has been so well read. (Check it out here). Here are excerpts and amazing images from a copy of The Face magazine dated January 1993. It’s looking back at 1992 and includes this article reviewing the key looks from the year.

So, if you don’t really understand early 90s fashion here is their guide called “Call the Fashion Police – the looks of 1992, what’s yours called”. It’s a tongue in cheek look back, written by Ashley Heath and Gavin Hills. The fab illustrations are by the very talented Jason Brooks.

The first key look is called Riveting Ronnie. According to The Face she will “bore the (Levis Big E) pants off you”.

Her essentials are “top to toe dark indigo denim (must be vintage Lee, Levi’s or Wrangler), seventies tight T-shirts, key chain, Patrick Cox crocodile skin loafers, expensive non bleaching washing powder.” So our first look is actually vintage!

Her favourite saying is “Hey! Has that skirt/top/feather boa got a selvage?”. So was this you back then? is this you now? It wasn’t me!

The next is called Pukka Man. “He’s got the railroad blues”. He wears “workwear shirt, trousers and socks, utility boots, heavy-duty dispatch bag, extra thick woolly hat, thermal undies.” Now I don’t really remember this one!

His biggest inspiration is “Travis Bickle’s haircut in Taxi Driver.

The third look is called Shabby Ranks and he’s described as “He’s as tough as ten tanks”. He wears ” string vests, distressed trews, distressed attitude, ear cuffs, Mad Cobra LP, Don-E haircut, Bally boots.”. Remember ear cuffs….I never got on with them as they always seemed to fall off!

“Top of his Christmas list is a mobile phone and a first edition of The Puffin Guide to Bogle Fun”

Now I do remember this look with many people embracing it.

The fourth look is definitely one I can remember. She is called Ms Happening “with the clompy shoes that spells bad news”.  I described having a pair of similar shoes in our 90s blog.

She wears ” long split skirt, Wonderbra, ugly clomp clomp shoes, leather choker, Kylie hair, tied white shirt or revealing top, VIP club pass”. So many sport this look especially with the emerging mainstream love of Ibiza.

The last look was probably more me. Bovril Babe was “friends with Brothers Grim”. She wore ” a sludge coloured wardrobe fusing expensive Parisian chic (Margiela and Demeulemeester) with second-hand threads and ethnic nonsense, natural born smoker complexion, heavy black make-up, unhappy frown, Brylcreem”.

I was into grunge music but I wasn’t wearing a frown.

Her favourite fashion role model was “the government’s Heroin screws you up adverts”

To be fair I was probably a mix of all 5! Which one were you?

Here’s a more helpful list of what we wore in 1992:

  • tight 70s T’s with 70s logos
  • leather thongs and chokers
  • Lee Originals and selvage denim
  • Hayford shirts
  • Batten Fransen
  • Ralph Lauren Polo
  • Skinny rib
  • Gingham checks
  • Waistcoats (without silky backs)
  • Carhaart, Hard Yakks and workwear
  • Leather jeans
  • Wonderbras
  • Hysteric Glamour
  • Animal prints
  • Pinstripe tailoring
  • Japanese dark indigo denim
  • Wristbands
  • Good Enough
  • Nike Huraches and Olympic anything
  • Hartford Americana Ts
  • Jaqueline Rabun id bracelets
  • Cord
  • Blundstones and black Red Wings
  • Agnes B ribbed knits
  • Flowery dresses
  • Chopped off jeans
  • JP Todds and new Half Crab Vans
  • Thermal underwear
  • Gucci heels
  • Patric Cox and Lawler Duffy loafers
  • Cross Colours and X hats
  • Destructo surf Ts
  • Pervert
  • Empty pockets and the same clothes as 91

Well it was a recession then, like now. There was a look to the past with fashion, like there is now. There was a love of mixing vintage with designer, like there is now. There was a love of the olympics, like there is now. There was a love of customising, like there is now.

Have things really changed?

Beat the Monday blues

January 30, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

Beat the Monday blues by checking out something or someone we love. Here at Your Vintage Life, we feel it is important to share great finds with you all as well as support local business.

So this Monday I introduce the yummiest vintage style shoes…..ever.

Now I used to love shoes. Pretty pointy ones in different colours…with little kitten heels. Glam, sexy and could be worn equally with jeans as with a pencil skirt. Then they went out of fashion. Huge high heels with stacked fronts….now I just cannot walk in them so I refuse to go down that wobbly route. I have since ended up shopping in Clarks. Not exactly cool…but they have some nice styles and they are comfy.

I’m 39 not 69! Honestly, I have gone down the comfy shoe route and I miss the frivolity of going into Office, Pied a Terre or LK Bennett on a Saturday and buying shoes that I just think are cute. (I have the best Jubilee sling backs ever…they must have been from 10 years ago on the last celebration! They are red, white and blue, with a leather bow…they cost so much but I didn’t care. I had to have them because I simply wanted them)

Well, hang onto your slingbacks, that feeling is back.

I introduce you to Miss L Fire. They are a London based company run by Lynsey Hand. They have been creating wonderful footwear for 7 years and sell worldwide both wholesale and online.

They shoes have a definite vintage vibe and will sit perfectly with your 40s and 50s dresses. They are colourful, well made and not so high you cannot walk! My favourite is Mamie…suede and leather in a gorgeous green. They will look fabulous with my 40s leaf dress.

I’m hankering after the Spectators too. Oh, so much choice!

They are currently on sale so grab them while you can. Soon to launch is the new Spring/Summer range….and my gosh we cannot wait.

They also have a lovely collection of modern lucite box bags. I have a great collection of originals (and not usually a fan of repro) but these are something else. Women used to use these on a daily basis, even out shopping. I love the glamour and am so glad Miss L Fire is bringing this look back.

They are definite ones to watch…with plans to sell at the Ink n Iron tattoo convention in LA as well as trade shows in Vegas and Italy, these shoes are really going to be huge (you heard it here first)

So go enjoy the site and grab the sale items before they go. While I’m talking about the website…it is so well designed I’m sure you will agree.

Here are some of my faves. Check out the full range at http://www.misslfire.com

Happy Vintage Valentine’s night

January 27, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

The perfect gift for your loved one this Valentines is some vintage nightwear. Did you know that negligees only account for 4% of nightwear sales? Are we really all sleeping in shorts and a T or an old trusty pair of pjs?

Well, I say let’s change this figure….yes they are comfy but sexy they are not.

We seem to have come along way since the 1800s when the negligee was first worn. Originating in France from the word neglige meaning neglected…women neglected to wear big baggy tunics opting to wear simpler versions of their outerwear. In the early 1900s this still was the case with long negligees in silk and soft lacing.  We have a pretty blue silk one which reminds us of the lovely underwear seen in the recent adaptation of Birdsong. So feminine and pretty….a million miles away from low slung pj bottoms and a vest top.

In the 1920s hemlines rose with the styles mirroring the flirty, Charleston style. It wasnt really until after World War 2 that the negligee became more sensual, sheer and slinky. Rita Hayworth wore a stunning silver grey negligee in Life magazine in 1942, sitting infront of an amazing vintage mirror (I don’t think anyone really noticed the mirror do you?)

The late 50s/60s saw the Baby Doll nightie which I simply love. So short, loose and sheer. Gil Evgren painted many a baby doll….this one is our favourite, see through nightwear worn when toasting marshmallows! The movie  Baby Doll in 1956 may have given the flirty nightwear it’s name with Caroll Baker wearing one. Or some say it’s due to its similarity to what a baby wears…short so you can easily change her!

In the 90s the style was to wear underwear as underwear. Courtney Love kick started this trend teaming up the sheer prettiness with black leather. Checkout out our blog 90s, A fashion decade?

The peignoir is another favourite and a perfect addition to your vintage slumber. A sheer robe, often undone from just below the bust down, it’s a perfect cover up. We have quite a few this Valentines. The name also originated from France (such a glamourous lot) from the word Peigner meaning to comb your hair. Maybe as ladies would sit at their dressing table wearing one whilest getting ready for bed? Rich, glamourous ladies even used to wear long gloves with their peignoirs!

I love these vintage bed jackets. These are 1950s/60s versions but they first were seen in the 1940s often as capes.

And for anyone who wants something more daring..what about the 80s look? Tight, brash and definately fun….here is a bright yellow Mary Quant lace body stocking!

Here are some more that we have for sale this Valentines. Which one is your favourite…or are you more of a pj lady?

Last week’s weakness

January 23, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

My weakness is shopping. Actually, not just shopping. My weakness is shopping, thrifting, collecting….I can’t drive past a car boot sale without dropping in, I can’t visit a new town without thrifting through the charity shops, I can’t ignore a sign saying “Garage Sale”..to be honest I can’t even drive past a skip without meer-catting my neck up to see if there’s any bounty inside.

So maybe I should share with you my weakness..in fact here is last week’s weakness.

Well we had quite a weekend of thrifting. As we were driving to a local car boot, Mr YVL slammed on the brakes and shouted “SKIP!” I then had to go skip diving…something I usually leave to him. There was an old suitcase in the skip but alas it had a hole in it. So today I won’t be revealing this item to you.

Then at the car boot Herbie spotted some Power Ranger toys and basically whined the whole way round….”Muuuuuummmmmmmy! Can I have a Power Ranger toy pleeeeeeeeeeeeease!”. In the end I relented and told him if he paid for it then yes he could.

So he did and 4 new toys still in its packet were  purchased. We got it home, cut up the packaging to get into it…and all their arms fell off! Yes, don’t ever feel you are getting a bargain if it sounds too good to be true. So now I have 4 multi coloured plastic men and 8 arms to trip over in my hall. Turns out to be a great buy as Herbie has played with them non stop since, and even slept with them last night.

So, now on to the real gem. We went to a local antique, collectables emporium that specialises in 1940s clothing. It’s a real treasure trove. I tried on loads of hats which none fitted. My YVL tried on some 50s shoes.

Then I peered through the rail of fur to see if there were any bargains that I could sell on. Then I noticed this gem. Gorgeous, simply gorgeous. Turns out I had not brought out any money and they didn’t take credit cards (sort this out please!)…so Mr YVL had to buy it for me. Bingo!

I love it so much. The faux fur is in great condition. The colour is a rich mink…really unusual and looks beautiful with the black.

I love the buttons the most….they are so eye-catching. Elastic folds over the buttons meaning there are no button holes. It’s a classic 60s shape, slightly A line which looks grate with long black boots.

The neckline has a hook and eye fastening to create a black round neckline.

It is beautifully made by Lister Minquilla which sounds foreign. It is in fact made in England. The label says “This elegant garment should be treated with care and worn as a luxury coat”. Is the nursery run classed as a luxury pastime?

Let me know what you think? Am I now the smartest girl in town?

Saturday’s jewellery haul

January 21, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

Remember 2 weeks ago I decided to start the 30 day de-clutter? (Read all about it here).

Well, I havent done too well even though I have already cleared out/given away/sold 79 items. Today I decided to go through my old sewing box which is full of costume jewellery.

It’s a nifty storage item (for more vintage storage  ideas click here) don’t you think? Well in the large bottom compartment there was a huge pile of twisted up modern jewellery. As I worked for Accessorize for 7 years, I managed to collect a whole heap of beaded matter.

So, first for the clear out. I selected 17 pieces: necklaces, brooches and bracelets that I havent worn for at least 5 years. These are all to be donated to a local charity fashion show raising money for Sue Ryder. They can then sell them on afterwards. There are 2 that maybe my mummy may like so she will have first dibs.

The great thing about having a clear out, is finding forgotten gems. I found a load of classic 90s necklaces…and as the 90s are back in  fashion (yes Topshop, I told it first here) I can now add them to my ASOS vintage accessory boutique. Hurrah…and with our next photo shoot this Friday they have been unearthed just in time!

So who had one of these? This was the hippy/70s trend that came along with the rise of Ibiza.

Also who had a cuff? I had so many (working for the leading accessory shop who gave 75% discount came in handy!). This is a black beaded one that I wore loads.

I also found this great hand-made charm bracelet I bought a few years back. I havent seen it for ages as its been tangled up in all these beads! I love it..there is so much going on: roses, beads, skull and crossbones…even glass strawberries! (For similar ones visit Abilu Creations)

The best find though, was my mum’s metal belt from the 60s. She gave me this forever ago. I don’t think it is very me but I will of course keep it all the same!

So that takes my de-clutter tally up to 96. The target is 200 so I better crack on. The bathroom cabinet is next with it’s overflowing bottles of stuff I never, ever use. You know the thing…free samples that have probably been in there for years!

Fashion Friday!

January 20, 2012 in Your Vintage Wardrobe

One of the big trends for Spring/Summer 2012 is the Peplum.

What’s a peplum I hear you cry! Well the dictionary describes it as: a short full flounce or an extension of a garment below the waist, covering the hips.

The peplum is great! It nips in the waist making you appear slimmer and then the extra material covers your hips, hiding a few sins.

Celine and Dior added peplums to sharp suits to give extra detail as well as some femininity to a sometimes masculine look.

It was Alexandra McQueen’s look that I love the most. The peplums were so pretty in lace creating a whimsical feel, again to classic bold shapes such as a pencil skirt.

GoRunway.com

Jason Wu’s peplum had a real vintage feel with a plain black top and white/black polka dot skirt with matching peplum.

As always, this trend is perfect for us vintage gals as there are loads of peplums out there waiting to adorn our waists. They were first seen in the 1800s and early examples were seen in a very early fashion book called Gody’s ”Lady’s Book”. They sat perfectly over a hoop and emphasised their tiny corseted waists. They were not part of the jacket but added on as a fashion accessory!

They had a comeback in the late 40s as women realised they could get an instant hourglass figure from a simple frill! One of my favourite dresses in my collection dates from the 1950s. It was featured in a blog called “Welcome to my Wardrobe”

The peplum classically sits on a jacket. This one dates from the 1980s and would be perfect for work or teamed with jeans.

Or how about on a blouse? These again are 1980s peplums. The lurex thread one is so cute and would be great over a little black dress to add the key look.

Or maybe  this bright red one for this seasons bold colour blocking trend. The peplum sticks out less but still gives you the effect in a slightly more masculine way.

This 1960s/70s dress is a sexy version of the peplum as its so fitted.

And finally, how about a maxi dress? This pastel aqua blue dress will look amazing on your holidays..team with flipflops for a casual evening out or glam up with stilettos!
